Unity hot update: changing C# code and assets after release

Updated October 9, 20264 min read

Unity builds C# into native code, so updating game logic after release takes more than downloading files. The HotUpdate edition handles both code and assets.

Why Unity is different

With IL2CPP, Unity compiles C# into native code when the app is built. Replacing logic in a released game therefore needs a layer that can run C# code dynamically.

Assets: AssetBundles and Addressables

Scenes, images, sounds and configuration are packed into bundles (AssetBundles or Addressables) and downloaded from a server while the game runs, so new content does not need a new build.

Code and assets in one release flow

The HotUpdate edition at ShopWebview updates both the C# game logic and the assets, and comes with an admin portal to push releases, test them and roll back.

Safe for players

Packages are signed and integrity-checked before they are applied. A broken release is rolled back immediately and players return to the stable version.
